The strong, high-concept premise of "Emanations" is a bit underwhelming in execution, but it's a notable hour of Voyager drama all the same. While investigating a small world littered with corpses wrapped in odd webbing, Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) is caught in a subspace vacuole and transported to the death-worshipping dimension of the Uhnori. His arrival upsets their ancient beliefs about the afterlife, a situation made worse for an Uhnori woman (Cecile Callan) when she awakens aboard Voyager instead of in her people's version of heaven, as she expected.

Written by Brannon Braga, "Emanations" is another Voyager tale that stirred controversy among the series' producers and some fans. Depending on how one looks at it, the completed show is either too philosophical about the biggest issue of all, death, or not thoughtful enough. The production design is a bit wanting: while the barren space-rock covered in bodies is one of the eeriest sights in Trek lore, the world of the Uhnori is woefully nondescriptive. Performances matter here: Wang's sudden lurching to life after his character has been euthanized is strong stuff, while the aforementioned Callan is very good as a woman whose faith is shattered in an instant. --Tom Keogh
